In a hole in the ground lived a hobbit.
Bright round doors in summery hues adorn the lush, grassy hillsides of Hobbiton like wild flowers. Behind every doorway, comfortably furnished dens wind into the ground: each one home to a hobbit or a family of the Shire's rosy little folk.

Each hobbit hole is unique and expresses the personality of the inhabitants with colors, gardens, furniture and everyday rustic waste.

Across the stream from the Green Dragon Inn in Hobbiton, Ted Sandyman's mill sits on the water's edge next to a stone bridge. Behind the blue door, gears driven by the constant turning of a water wheel grind grain to make bread, a favorite food that no hobbit accustomed to the comforts of the Shire can long do without.

This detailed miniature environment is an exacting miniature replica of the movie set that can be visited at Hobbiton in Matamata, New Zealand. It was designed by the same artists and craftsmen who worked on the film.
