The fable of the wooden boy who wanted to be a real boy, based on the novel written by the Italian author Carlo Collodi in 1883, gets a version set in 1930s Italy, during the Fascist regime and World War II. In the plot, a respected carpentry artist named Geppetto once spent his day mourning the untimely death of his only child, who fell victim to a military bomb that fell on his small town. To honor his memory, he plants a pine cone given to him by his son next to his grave. Sebastian, an anthropomorphic cricket, begins to live on the pine tree that grew there, but one day Geppetto cuts down the pine tree, frustrated by the sense of loss, and with its wood he builds a puppet that soon comes to life by the forest fairy's mysterious powers that call it Pinocchio. The fairy promises to grant Sebastian a wish in exchange for his services as Pinocchio's moral guide. When Geppetto learns that Pinocchio is alive, he is initially shocked, but his fatherly instincts lead him to protect and love the mischievous puppet.
