Clad only in a turtle-shell vest, worn jeans and a pair of big red sneakers, the rugged half-man, half-pig runs through the sewers of New York, smashing brick walls in pursuit of his Chelonian enemies. Despite the menacing appearance of his large tusks, and the fact that he is heavily armed with a submachine gun fitted with a drill and brandishing a crowbar above his whimsical mohawk haircut, even with great physical strength, his incompetence, lack of intelligence and playful behavior almost always causes him to fail miserably. Originally an African-American human gangster called Anton Zeck, better known as Bebop, he was the second-in-command of a street gang led by his friend and partner Rocksteady, who worked for Shredder. They received the mission to stop TV reporter April O'Neil from reporting a series of crimes in the city. While being pursued by the gang members, she sought shelter in the sewers and ended up
meeting and being rescued by the group of Ninja Turtles who defeated the gang in a humiliating battle for Bebop, Rocksteady and their allies. After their army also failed to defeat the Turtles, the alien Krang advised the Shredder to turn his soldiers into mutants so that they would have the same abilities as the Turtles. With a new plan, Shredder sought volunteers for his experiments, and Bebop and Rocksteady offered
even to undertake the procedure, even without being fully aware of what it will entail. After Shredder steals a rhinoceros and a boar from the zoo, the thugs have their DNA mutated with the kidnapped animals, Bebop transforms into an anthropomorphic mutant boar and Rocksteady into a rhinoceros, both gain the immense strength of their animal counterparts but retain the limited intellect .
